The Kamloops context
Kamloops sits in a semi-arid valley at the meeting of the North and South Thompson rivers. The climate here changes what good metalwork looks like.
Most of what a Lower Mainland fabricator learns about protecting steel is built around salt air and constant rain. Kamloops is a different problem. The city averages roughly 547 mm of precipitation a year, less than half the coast, with long stretches of hot, dry summer weather and some of the strongest sun in the province. Corrosion is a smaller threat than it is in Richmond or on the North Shore. UV degradation and heat movement are bigger ones.
That shows up in two places. First, finish selection: a powder coat that holds its colour under coastal cloud can chalk and fade under a Kamloops summer, so we lean on UV-stable finishes for anything exposed. Second, thermal movement. A long steel railing or a structural run that bakes in direct sun expands more than the same assembly on the coast, and if the connections do not allow for it, you get noise, stress, and eventually cracked welds. Snow is the other Interior factor. Ground snow loads around Kamloops run higher than the coast, design values in the area sit near 1.8 to 2.4 kPa depending on elevation and which side of the Trans-Canada Highway a site is on, per the BC Building Code climatic data. Canopies and exterior stairs get engineered to those numbers, not to Vancouver's.
