Swing vs slide driveway gates, decision guide

The single biggest decision on a custom driveway gate is the configuration: swing or slide. Get it wrong and the gate either fails to open in the first wet season because the swing arc fouls a parked car, or the slide gate becomes useless when the driveway slopes 4° through the gate line. The decision is driven by geometry, driveway depth, side-yard clearance, grade, and wind exposure, not by aesthetic preference. This page walks through the call for Metro Vancouver driveways.

The core decision matrix

Eight site conditions drive almost every swing vs slide call. Run through these against your actual driveway before you finalize any design.

The swing case

A swing gate pivots on a vertical hinge column at one or both sides of the opening. For a single swing, one leaf rotates 90° (or up to 110° on stretched hinges) into the property. For a double swing, the most common Metro Vancouver residential configuration, two leaves meet at the centre and each rotates back to one side.

Where swing is the right answer

  • Deep front-yard driveways: The classic Vancouver West Side or Shaughnessy property where the driveway runs 30+ ft from the sidewalk to the garage. There is plenty of clear space behind the gate line for the leaves to swing.
  • Driveways with side-yard fence: The leaves can swing along an existing fence line; the fence and gate are designed to look like one continuous element.
  • Architectural feature gates: When the gate is supposed to be a centrepiece, heritage estate, custom home, ornamental detail, swing reads more architectural because the open position frames the entry.
  • Sloped driveways: Swing handles slope across the opening because the leaves can be cut to follow the grade and the hinge geometry can be set to swing along the slope.

Where swing fails

  • Short driveways: If a parked car ever sits within the swing arc, the gate cannot open. This is the single most common failure mode when homeowners specify swing on an urban lot.
  • Properties at the sidewalk: If the gate sits right at the property line and the leaves swing into the public right-of-way, the swing is not allowed, period.
  • Steep uphill driveways: If the driveway pitches up sharply behind the gate line, the leaves have to clear the rising surface. On steep grades the geometry simply does not work.

The slide case

A slide gate moves horizontally, the gate leaf travels parallel to the property line, from a closed position blocking the opening to an open position alongside the opening. Three configurations: V-track (the leaf rolls on a steel track at ground level), cantilever (the leaf is suspended from an overhead truss running through wheels on the receive post), and bi-parting (two slides converging from opposite sides).

Where slide is the right answer

  • Short urban driveways: Kitsilano, East Vancouver, Mount Pleasant, properties where the gate sits close to the sidewalk and there is no room for swing.
  • Wide openings: 18+ ft openings are practical on slide, awkward on swing. Cantilever slides handle 30 ft openings without difficulty.
  • Driveways with side-yard runway space: The slide needs a clear length of side yard equal to the leaf length (V-track) or 1.5× leaf length (cantilever) to receive the gate when open.
  • Industrial and commercial sites: Where opening speed matters, slide gates with high-speed operators clear faster than swing.

Where slide fails

  • No side-yard runway: If there is a structure, planting bed, or another driveway alongside the opening where the gate would slide into, slide is impossible regardless of how attractive it sounds.
  • Sloped V-track: A V-track slide needs a level ground track. If the side yard slopes more than ~1°, V-track stops working, only cantilever applies.
  • Snow climates: A V-track slide gate in Whistler or Squamish needs the track cleared after every snowfall. Cantilever avoids this. Swing avoids it entirely.

Cantilever slide vs V-track slide

Within the slide category, cantilever vs V-track is a secondary decision driven by site conditions:

  • Cantilever: The leaf is suspended from an overhead truss running through wheels on the receive post. The gate body never touches the ground. Handles slope, snow, ice, and uneven ground. Costs more (longer leaf for counterbalance, heavier framing, larger operator). Needs receive-side runway equal to ~1.5× leaf length.
  • V-track: The leaf rolls on V-grooved wheels along a steel track at ground level. Lower cost, simpler engineering. Requires perfectly level track installation and ongoing track clearing. Practical for level paved driveways with low snow exposure, most lower-elevation Metro Vancouver sites.

Wind exposure, the under-discussed factor

A swing gate presents the full leaf area perpendicular to incoming wind in the open position. A slide gate presents the leaf edge-on as it travels. On exposed waterfront and hillside properties, North Shore mountainside, West Vancouver waterfront, Howe Sound exposure, high gust loading on a fully open swing leaf can stress the operator and over time bend the leaf. For exposed sites we either upsize the operator and footings on a swing (the structural answer), or recommend slide if the site geometry supports it (the configurational answer).

How we actually make the call on a site visit

On a typical Metro Vancouver site visit we walk the driveway with a tape and ask:

  1. Where is the proposed gate line?
  2. How deep is the driveway behind that line?
  3. What is the slope through the line?
  4. Is there clear side-yard space and how long?
  5. What does the receive-side ground look like, paved, planted, or built up?
  6. How exposed is the site to wind?
  7. What are the homeowner's expectations on opening speed and operating frequency?

From those seven answers the recommendation becomes obvious in most cases. Where it is not obvious, usually because the geometry could go either way, we present both options with the trade-offs called out, and the homeowner picks based on aesthetic preference and budget.

What is the rule of thumb for swing vs slide?

If you have driveway depth behind the gate line equal to at least 110% of the leaf length, swing is the default. If you do not, short urban driveway, sloped driveway pulling away from the house, or a property where the gate sits right at the sidewalk, slide becomes the answer. Cantilever slide handles cases where the ground is sloped or where you cannot install a track.

How wide can a swing gate be?

A single swing leaf practically maxes out around 12 ft in residential applications because the cantilevered weight on the hinge becomes hard to manage, and wind load on the leaf increases linearly with width. For openings 12 to 18 ft, double swing (two leaves meeting in the middle) is the standard. For openings beyond 18 ft, slide gates take over because the structural problem of holding a long swing leaf level over years of cyclic loading is not worth solving.

How wide can a slide gate be?

Cantilever slides go to about 30 ft in residential and 40+ ft in industrial. The constraint is the side-yard runway: cantilever slides need an equal length of receive space alongside the opening, plus 50% extra for counterbalance overhang. For very wide industrial openings, bi-parting slides, two cantilever slide gates meeting in the middle, split the load and halve the runway requirement.

What happens if the driveway slopes through the gate line?

A swing gate handles slope across the opening, the leaves can be cut to follow the grade, and the hinge geometry can be set to swing along the slope. A V-track slide cannot handle slope at all; the track has to be level. A cantilever slide handles modest slope (2 to 5°) because it does not touch the ground. Significant slope through the gate line eliminates V-track entirely and pushes the decision to swing or cantilever based on driveway depth.

Can I have a slide gate on a sloped driveway?

Yes, but only cantilever slide. The cantilever design suspends the gate from a top truss running through wheels mounted to the receive post; the gate body never touches the ground. This works on slopes that would defeat any other slide system. The trade-off is cantilever slides are more expensive (heavier framing, larger operator, more steel) and need more runway space than V-track.

What about bi-parting swing vs bi-parting slide?

Both exist. Bi-parting swing (double swing) is the most common Metro Vancouver residential configuration, two leaves meeting at the centre, each on its own hinge column. Bi-parting slide is rare in residential but common in industrial, two cantilever slides moving in opposite directions to clear a wide opening fast. Residential bi-parting slide is overkill unless the opening exceeds 24 ft.

Can the same gate be opened manually if power fails?

Yes. Every operator we install has a manual release that disengages the operator from the gate so the leaf can be pushed by hand. On linear arm operators it is a small key-operated release on the operator body. On underground hydraulic operators it is a release valve at the cylinder. On rack-drive slide operators it is a clutch lever. We walk through the manual release operation during owner handover.
