Steel picket railings, custom fabrication
Steel picket railings are the workhorse of custom metal guards. They satisfy BC Building Code at the lowest cost tier, accept any RAL powder coat colour, work on stairs, balconies, decks, and commercial assemblies, and have a fabrication process that's predictable. The interesting design decisions happen at the picket profile, the top rail detail, the post-to-substrate connection, and the finish, small choices that make a big visual difference on the finished product.
Picket profiles we fabricate
- ½" square solid bar: The default. Clean square edges, accepts powder coat well, structurally well-sized for residential infill loads. Typical centre-to-centre spacing 105 to 115 mm.
- ⅝" square solid bar: Heavier visual weight for a more substantial appearance, often used on premium residential and commercial work.
- ½" round solid bar: Softer visual line than square, slightly higher fabrication cost because welds are harder to grind cleanly on round-to-flat joints.
- Tube pickets (¾" or 1" square tube): Used where cost savings on material per linear foot matter and where the slight reduction in stiffness vs solid bar is acceptable structurally. Welded caps required at the top.
- Custom profiles: Tapered, decorative, or signature shapes for specific architectural intents. Cost rises with complexity.
Top rail details
The top rail is what people actually touch, and what dominates the finished visual. Common configurations:
- Flat bar top: 1½" × ¼" or 2" × ¼" hot-rolled flat bar oriented horizontally. Cheapest; most common on entry-tier residential.
- Wood-capped flat bar: Steel flat bar structural top with a hardwood cap (usually walnut or oak) for a warmer hand feel and a hybrid material aesthetic.
- Round pipe top: 1½" round steel pipe (≈42 mm, at the top of the BCBC graspable range). Code-compliant as a handrail without a separate handrail element.
- Tube top with welded picket sockets: Square or rectangular tube top with pre-cut sockets for each picket. Higher fabrication cost but produces the cleanest visible joints.
- Stair-graspable profile: For stair guards, the top rail must satisfy BCBC handrail graspability (perimeter 100 to 160 mm, largest cross-section under 57 mm). Round pipe at 1½" passes; some flat-bar profiles do not.
Post sections and anchorage
Post selection and anchorage are where the engineering work happens. The post has to take the cumulative top-rail load over its tributary length and transfer it to the supporting structure. Common configurations:
- HSS 2"×2"×¼": Standard residential post; 4-foot spacing; powder-coated finish.
- HSS 3"×2" or 3"×3": Heavier sections used on stairs, longer post-to-post spans, or where the top rail wraps and produces concentrated loads.
- Solid square or round post: Used where the visual aesthetic demands a heavier post profile; structurally over-spec for typical guard loading.
- Anchorage: Post base plates with through-bolts or anchor bolts into concrete; through-bolts to structural blocking in wood-framed decks; welded socket connections to structural steel substructure. Sized by the engineer for the calculated load and substrate condition.
BC Building Code compliance
Picket railings have to satisfy the same code rules as any other guard:
- Sphere test: 100 mm sphere cannot pass between adjacent pickets. Drives 95 to 98 mm clear spacing.
- Top rail load: 0.5 kN/m horizontal residential, 0.7 kN/m commercial.
- Concentrated load: 0.9 kN at any point on the top rail.
- Infill load: 0.5 kN over 100 × 100 mm, easily satisfied by ½" or larger solid pickets.
- Climbability: Vertical pickets pass the residential climbability rule by default; horizontal pickets need to be reviewed against BCBC 9.8.8.6.

Finishes
- Powder coat: The standard. Available in any RAL colour. Matte black (RAL 9005), charcoal grey (RAL 7016), bronze, and off-white are most common in Metro Vancouver. Texture and metallic options available at modest premium.
- Hot-dip galvanizing (exterior): 50+ year corrosion protection per American Galvanizers Association. Visible spangle texture; can be top-coated with powder for a duplex system.
- Duplex (galvanized + powder): Best long-term performance for exterior, corrosion protection of galvanizing plus architectural finish of powder coat. Adds cost over either alone.
- Wet paint: Specified rarely now, powder coat outperforms paint in durability and consistency for almost all applications. Where wet paint comes up: matching an existing painted heritage railing, or specific architectural intent.
The fabrication process
- Field measurement: After any substrate prep is complete, we field-measure the railing run and confirm post locations against the architect\'s drawings.
- Shop drawings: 3D drawings showing post positions, picket spacing, top rail profile, and code-compliance callouts.
- Cutting and prep: Pickets, posts, and top rails cut to length with proper end prep for clean welds.
- Welding: MIG welding with shielding gas; full-penetration welds at structural joints. Welders certified to CSA W47.1.
- Finishing: Sandblasting, primer (where required), and powder coat. Galvanizing handled at a specialty facility.
- Installation: Site delivery, structural anchorage, and final adjustment. Building department inspection follows.
When picket railing is the right answer (and when it's not)
Good fits: Almost every residential interior and exterior application. Stair guards. Mixed material designs (steel pickets with hardwood top cap). Heritage-influenced contemporary work where pickets fit the vocabulary. Strata replacements where the existing system was a picket railing. Commercial assemblies where the architectural intent calls for a structured, defined railing line.
Poor fits: View balconies where the homeowner specifically wants visual transparency (glass is the answer there). Industrial-modern projects where the visual rhythm of pickets conflicts with the design. Projects with a budget for premium materials where a glass or stainless system would deliver a higher-end finished look.

FAQs about picket railings
What is the standard picket spacing?
Picket spacing in BC has to satisfy the 100 mm sphere rule (BCBC 9.8.8.5), no opening can pass a 100 mm sphere. In practice, that drives clear spacing of 95 to 98 mm between adjacent pickets, which after accounting for picket thickness usually means a centre-to-centre spacing of about 105 to 115 mm depending on picket profile. Standard ½" square pickets at 105 mm centre-to-centre is the most common configuration we fabricate.
What size picket is structurally required?
BCBC requires the infill (pickets) to resist 0.5 kN over a 100 × 100 mm area. For ½" (12 mm) square solid steel picket at standard residential spacing, this is well within capacity with no special analysis required. For larger or less stiff sections (round bar, thinner flat bar), the engineer's calculation against the infill load is what determines minimum size. Aesthetically, ⅜" or 5/8" pickets are common substitutes; ⅜" needs to be checked structurally; 5/8" has more capacity than required.
Can pickets be installed horizontally instead of vertically?
On residential single-family work where children may be present, horizontal pickets fall under the same climbability concern as horizontal cables (BCBC 9.8.8.6). Inspectors' interpretation varies. On commercial, multi-unit residential, and adult-only occupancies, horizontal pickets are permitted without the climbability restriction. What is the typical post spacing for a picket railing?
4-foot post spacing is standard for residential picket railings, it produces a structurally adequate post connection and balanced visual rhythm. Wider spacing is possible with heavier post sections or thicker top rails, but 4-foot is the sweet spot for most residential and light commercial applications. Stair guards often use slightly tighter spacing (3-foot) to align posts with key stair geometry points like the top, bottom, and any landings.
What welding is used to attach pickets to the top and bottom rails?
Pickets are typically full-penetration welded at the top to the top rail, and either welded or socket-fitted at the bottom. The welds are MIG-welded with shielding gas in our shop and ground smooth where the joint is visible. What is the difference between a "picket railing" and an "iron railing"?
Mostly a marketing distinction. "Picket railing" emphasizes the structural element (vertical pickets); "iron railing" emphasizes the material and aesthetic. We fabricate both, but our pickets are mild steel (not actual iron), and they are welded and powder-coated rather than hand-forged. Can pickets be a non-standard shape, round, twisted, decorative?
Yes. Solid round bar (½" or ⅝"), tube section, or decorative profiles are all options. Cost increases as profile complexity increases, square bar is the lowest-cost picket; round is mid-tier; specialty profiles (tapered, decorative, or with cast caps) are highest. We avoid generating specific decorative profiles unless the architect or homeowner has a clear reference, because aesthetic preferences vary widely.
How are picket railings finished?
Powder coat is the dominant finish, durable, available in any RAL colour, and consistent across the whole assembly. Matte black, charcoal grey (RAL 7016), and bronze are the most common colour choices in Metro Vancouver. Hot-dip galvanizing is the right finish for any exterior application where long-term corrosion is a concern; the visible "spangle" finish can be top-coated with powder coat for a duplex system that combines galvanized corrosion resistance with architectural finish.
How much does a picket railing cost?
Steel picket is the entry tier of railing systems, less expensive than glass, cable, or stainless. The cost per linear foot depends on picket profile, post spacing, top rail material, finish, and substrate condition. Can a picket railing be retrofit on an existing deck?
Yes, retrofit picket railings on existing decks are a common scope for our shop. The structural challenge is that the old railing's post anchorage may not be adequate for current code loading. We field-verify the existing deck framing during quoting and call out any reinforcement needed before fabrication. Common scenarios: replacing rotted wood pickets with steel; replacing an inadequately anchored aluminum railing with a properly anchored steel system; or upgrading a non-code-compliant railing during a deck refinish.
How long does fabrication and installation take?
Standard residential picket railings run 4 to 6 weeks from approved shop drawings to installation, faster than glass or cable because the materials are stocked locally and the finishing process is straightforward. Long runs, custom profiles, or specialty finishes can extend lead time to 6 to 8 weeks. We sequence the field measurement after any substrate prep is complete, so the fabricated railing matches the actual installed condition.
