Driveway gate materials and finishes, what to actually specify

The material and finish on a driveway gate determine whether it looks the way it does at install for the next 25 years or starts shedding flakes of paint by year five. The Pacific Northwest is one of the harder climates in North America for exterior steel, high rainfall, persistent humidity, mild but constant freeze-thaw cycling at higher elevations, and salt-air exposure on the coast. The right specification handles all of that without requiring meaningful maintenance. The wrong specification fails predictably. This page walks through what we actually recommend.

Hot-dip galvanizing, the foundation of exterior steel

Galvanizing immerses the fabricated steel in molten zinc at roughly 450°C. The zinc bonds metallurgically with the steel surface, creating a thick (80 to 100 micron) zinc-iron alloy layer plus a pure zinc top layer. The result is sacrificial corrosion protection: even if the coating is scratched through to the steel, the surrounding zinc continues to protect the exposed metal electrochemically.

Specification: galvanizing should be performed to ASTM A123, the standard for hot-dip galvanizing of structural steel. Per the American Galvanizers Association, properly galvanized structural steel in coastal environments has a typical service life exceeding 50 years before any maintenance is required.

Trade-off: bare galvanizing is industrial in appearance, visible spangle pattern, slight texture from the dipping process. For functional installations (industrial gates, fire egress) this is acceptable. For most residential applications the galvanizing is a base layer for a powder coat top finish, the duplex system covered next.

The duplex finish, galvanizing + powder coat

For exterior residential gates, our default specification is hot-dip galvanizing followed by a polyester powder coat in the homeowner's chosen colour. The system delivers:

  • Sacrificial zinc protection underneath: Even if the powder coat is scratched, the zinc continues to protect the steel.
  • Architectural finish on top: Powder coat provides any colour, smooth or textured surface, matte to gloss range.
  • Adhesion bonus: Powder coat adheres better to a properly prepared galvanized substrate than to bare steel, because the zinc surface holds the powder during electrostatic application.
  • Service life: 25 to 30 years before the powder coat needs refinishing; underlying galvanizing continues to protect for decades after that.

Surface prep matters: galvanized steel that is "newly galvanized" cannot be powder-coated immediately, the zinc must weather for 2 to 3 weeks (or be artificially aged with a phosphate wash) so the powder coat bonds to a stable zinc oxide surface rather than freshly active zinc. We coordinate the galvanizer's schedule and the powder coater's intake so the timing is correct.

Powder coat colour systems

Powder coat is available in any colour through the RAL system (the European architectural colour standard), plus matched colours from major paint manufacturers. The most-requested Metro Vancouver finishes:

  • Matte black (RAL 9005 or RAL 9011): By far the most-specified residential gate finish. Reads contemporary; pairs with most house exteriors; hides minor surface variation; resists visible UV fade.
  • Bronze / dark brown (RAL 8019, 8014, custom matches): Common on heritage and traditional homes; complements brick and warm stucco.
  • Charcoal / dark grey (RAL 7016, 7022): Modern alternative to black; reads less stark on contemporary white or pale-stucco homes.
  • Custom architectural colours: Matched to architectural specifications (sometimes from a Sherwin-Williams, Benjamin Moore, or Pratt & Lambert specification). Lead time adds 1 to 2 weeks for custom mixes.

Metallic and high-gloss finishes are available but tend to show defects more clearly and weather differently from matte finishes. We discuss long-term appearance during finish selection.

Aluminum, when it makes sense

Aluminum is naturally corrosion-resistant (it forms a self-protecting oxide layer in air) and weighs about a third of equivalent steel. Two practical applications:

  • Lightweight pedestrian gates: Where the leaf is small enough that the lower stiffness of aluminum is not a constraint, and the lower weight makes manual operation easier.
  • Multi-unit balcony gates: Where deck or balcony slab loading is a constraint on the property and total gate weight matters.

Trade-offs: aluminum is about 1/3 as stiff as steel for the same section size, so a leaf in aluminum either has to be smaller, heavier-built (negating the weight advantage), or accept higher deflection. Welding aluminum requires a TIG or MIG procedure with specific filler alloys; the welds are softer than the parent material. Powder coat over aluminum can chalk in direct UV exposure unless the coating is rated for outdoor architectural service. For most custom Metro Vancouver driveway gates, aluminum is not the right choice, galvanized steel does the job better and lasts longer for less money.

316 stainless steel, premium and waterfront

316 grade stainless steel includes molybdenum, which dramatically improves resistance to chloride pitting compared to 304 grade. For driveway gates on direct-waterfront properties, West Vancouver shoreline, Bowen Island, parts of Tsawwassen, 316 stainless solves the salt-air corrosion problem that even galvanized steel struggles with over time.

Trade-offs: cost is 2 to 4× the equivalent galvanized steel gate. Welding requires specific procedures to avoid heat-affected zone sensitization. Stainless gates typically have a brushed finish (most common, hides minor scratches) or a mirror polish (premium look, scratches show). They are a premium product for a premium application, not a default residential spec.

Maintenance, what each finish actually needs

  • Duplex (galvanized + powder coat): Annual fresh-water rinse to remove pollen, dust, and any salt deposits. Inspect for any deep scratches and touch up with matched-colour spray (kept on hand from install). Re-apply automotive-grade wax every 2 to 3 years to extend the powder coat finish.
  • Galvanized only: Effectively maintenance-free for the first 30+ years. Visual inspection annually; address any heavy localised damage with cold-galvanizing compound.
  • Aluminum + powder coat: Same routine as duplex steel; check coating chalking in direct UV exposure annually.
  • 316 stainless: Quarterly fresh-water rinse on waterfront properties. Annual cleaning with stainless-specific cleaner (avoid chloride or acidic cleaners). Address any tea-staining (light surface oxidation) before it spreads.
  • Wrought iron / mild steel + paint: Annual inspection; spot-touch-up paint at any chip; full repaint every 7 to 10 years. Highest-maintenance option; usually accepted only on heritage projects.

How long does powder coat last?

Powder coat over hot-dip galvanizing in Metro Vancouver: 15 to 20 years before noticeable colour fade or chalking; 25 to 30 years before any structural intervention. Powder coat over bare mild steel: 5 to 10 years before edge corrosion starts to lift the coating. Direct UV exposure (south-facing gates) accelerates colour fade; coastal salt exposure accelerates coating breakdown. Annual cleaning and waxing extends service life meaningfully.

Should I use aluminum instead of steel for my gate?

Aluminum has two advantages, lower weight (about 1/3 the density of steel) and natural corrosion resistance, and two disadvantages: lower stiffness for the same section size (so the leaf has to be heavier-built or smaller) and specialty welding requirements. For most custom driveway gates in Metro Vancouver, hot-dip galvanized + powder-coated steel delivers better long-term performance for less money than aluminum. Aluminum makes sense on multi-unit projects where deck or balcony loading constrains weight, and on some lightweight pedestrian gates.

When does it make sense to use stainless steel?

Stainless steel for driveway gates is a premium spec. It makes sense on direct-waterfront properties where salt-air exposure is severe, on heritage projects where the look of brushed or polished stainless is the design intent, and on high-end estate gates where the finish is part of the architectural statement. Use 316 grade for any chloride-exposure application, 304 will pit in salt air. Cost is 2 to 4× the equivalent galvanized steel gate.

What about wrought iron?

True wrought iron is rarely available now; "wrought iron" gates today are usually hot-rolled mild steel formed to look like the traditional material. We can produce period-appropriate gates in this style for heritage Shaughnessy, Kerrisdale, and West End properties, typically with heavier picket sections, traditional collar and scroll details, and a paint finish chosen for historical accuracy. Maintenance is higher than on a galvanized + powder coat gate; the look is the trade-off.

Can my gate match an existing fence?

Yes. We design custom driveway gates to match an existing fence specification, same picket profile, same top rail height, same finish colour, same hinge column dimensions where possible. On new builds we frequently design the perimeter fence and the gate together so they read as one continuous element. Fence-and-gate harmony is a core design consideration on most residential projects.
