Metal fence materials and finishes for the Pacific Northwest

Metro Vancouver's climate asks a lot of exterior metalwork. Around 1,200 mm of annual rainfall at most Metro Vancouver stations, mild winters with few freeze-thaw cycles, and, for anything within a few kilometres of the inlet, salt air exposure. The material and finish choices on a fence determine how long it lasts and what maintenance it requires. Getting these wrong means refinishing or replacing sections within a decade.

The standard residential spec: mild steel with powder coat

For most Metro Vancouver residential fences that are not in direct saltwater exposure, mild (carbon) steel with a powder coat finish over a zinc-phosphate primer is the default. The steel gives the design flexibility, it can be cut, bent, and welded to almost any profile. The primer inhibits corrosion at the substrate. The powder coat provides colour and a tough exterior film.

The weak points are mechanical damage (scratches that breach the coating allow rust to creep under the film) and uncoated cut edges. We mitigate both: all cut edges are ground smooth and primed before coating, and the powder coat is applied at a thickness that resists chipping. But even with proper application, a powder-coated steel fence in a harsh marine environment will need touch-up at exposed scratches and may need a full refinish at 15 to 20 years.

When to specify duplex finish

Hot-dip galvanizing followed by powder coat, the duplex system, is the specification to use when:

  • The site is within 1 to 2 km of saltwater (inlet, ocean waterfront, False Creek, river)
  • The fence is on a commercial or industrial property where maintenance is difficult to schedule
  • The fence is in a wet microclimate, north-facing, shaded by tall structures, or in a low-drainage area that stays damp
  • The client wants 30+ year service life without refinishing

The galvanizing provides a sacrificial zinc layer bonded metallurgically to the steel, it corrodes instead of the steel. The powder coat slows the consumption of the zinc layer. According to American Galvanizers Association corrosion data, duplex systems outlast either finish alone by a factor of 1.5 to 2.5× in temperate marine conditions.

Aluminum: when it makes sense and when it does not

Aluminum is corrosion-proof without any applied finish. In the right application, a simple residential fence profile, installed where the inherent stiffness of aluminum is adequate, it is a legitimate option. And the 30+ year maintenance-free service life has real value on properties where repainting is not a priority or where a strata board controls maintenance decisions.

Where aluminum falls short: custom fabrication. Aluminum welds less cleanly than steel, is more prone to distortion, and the heat-affected zone in the weld is weaker than in steel. For any fence that requires complex bending, tight welds in confined sections, or integration of load-bearing hardware (hinge plates, post anchors), steel is the better choice. Aluminum also costs more per linear metre of fence than steel on most custom profiles.

Colour selection

We powder coat to any RAL colour. For exterior fencing, the practical choices run from flat black (RAL 9005, the most popular) through dark greys (RAL 7021, 7016) and dark greens (RAL 6009 for heritage and garden applications). Lighter colours and bright colours fade faster in UV exposure and show scratches more visibly. Textured powder coats, satin, fine texture, hammertone, hide minor surface marks better than smooth gloss finishes.

If you are designing a fence-and-gate system, the fence panels and the gate should match in finish batch wherever possible. Specifying both through the same shop on the same schedule means the colour and sheen level are consistent.

A bare steel fence will rust. For any property within a couple of kilometres of the inlet, a duplex finish adds meaningful protection.

What is a duplex finish and do I need it?

A duplex finish is hot-dip galvanizing applied first, then powder coat applied over the galvanized surface. The galvanizing is a zinc layer bonded to the steel, it provides sacrificial cathodic protection, meaning the zinc corrodes before the steel does. The powder coat over top provides a colour layer and slows the weathering of the zinc. The combination lasts significantly longer than either finish alone. Whether you need it depends on site exposure: for a rear-yard fence in inland Burnaby, powder coat alone is generally fine. For anything coastal, North Vancouver waterfront, West Vancouver, False Creek area, Richmond near the river, duplex is worth the added cost.

How does aluminum compare to steel for fencing in this climate?

Aluminum is naturally corrosion-resistant, it does not rust, and for simple fence profiles it requires no paint or galvanizing to hold up in the Metro Vancouver climate. The trade-off is stiffness. Aluminum has roughly one-third the stiffness of steel, which means aluminum fence sections of the same section size will deflect more under wind load and feel less rigid. For a simple horizontal slat residential fence, this is manageable with appropriate post sizing. For a fence with custom design detail, tight radii, integrated hinge plates, or welded structural connections, steel is the better choice. Aluminum also costs more per kilogram of material, the cost difference versus steel narrows when you factor in finishing.

What powder coat colour is most popular for metal fences in Metro Vancouver?

Flat black or near-black (RAL 9005, RAL 7021 dark grey) is the most common colour across contemporary residential metal fences in Metro Vancouver. It reads as clean and architectural, does not visually compete with landscaping or cladding, and fades slowly compared to lighter colours. Charcoal grey (RAL 7016) is close behind. Some heritage and garden fence installs use dark green (RAL 6009 or RAL 6012) to tie in with landscaping. Do the posts need a different finish than the fence panels?

Not necessarily, we typically finish posts and panels to the same spec in the same batch. But the posts bear the full structural and moisture load of the fence, and they are the hardest component to replace if they corrode prematurely. For that reason, if you are anywhere near the saltwater exposure band, we recommend specifying the posts to the higher finish spec (duplex) even if the panels are powder coat only. The cost difference on the posts alone is modest, and they are the part most likely to fail first on an under-finished fence.

What is the service life of a hot-dip galvanized fence?

The <a href="https://www.galvanizeit.org/hot-dip-galvanizing/how-long-does-it-last-" target="_blank" rel="noopener">American Galvanizers Association's corrosion data</a> puts the service life of hot-dip galvanizing in a temperate coastal climate at 30 to 50+ years before the first maintenance. Metro Vancouver is a temperate marine climate, so a properly galvanized fence section exposed to typical urban air should see at the lower end of that range, while anything in a low-pollution inland setting will see longer. Duplex (galv + powder coat) extends the timeline further because the powder coat significantly slows the rate at which the zinc layer is consumed.
