Project overview
Institutional stairs for two BC Interior hospitals
Interior Health is one of the seven regional health authorities in British Columbia, responsible for hospitals and care facilities across the BC Interior. Jeff and Simon fabricated and installed stairs for Interior Health at two of its largest acute-care sites: Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops and Kelowna General Hospital in Kelowna.
Institutional stair work in a hospital carries requirements that residential projects do not. Egress stairs are part of the life-safety system, the welding documentation has to satisfy the project specification, and the fabrication and installation have to fit around an operating healthcare facility. Our C.W.B. certification to CSA W47.1 covers the structural and non-structural welding these scopes require.
Both sites sit in the BC Interior, a 3.5 to 4 hour drive up the Coquihalla from our Burnaby shop. We handle that distance the way we handle any out-of-region institutional work: detail and fabricate the assemblies in Burnaby under shop supervision, then mobilize a crew for installation. It is the same delivery model that makes us a practical fabrication partner for commercial and institutional projects across the Interior, not just Metro Vancouver.
The Interior Health work is the reason we now serve Kamloops and Kelowna as full service areas. If you are coordinating a commercial, institutional, or custom-residential metalwork scope anywhere in the Thompson-Okanagan, the same shop and the same certification stand behind it.

Interior Health
Interior Health is one of British Columbia`s seven regional health authorities, running acute-care hospitals and facilities across the Thompson-Okanagan, Kootenay, and Cariboo. Royal Inland Hospital and Kelowna General are two of its largest acute-care sites.
Work inside an operating hospital has to fit around clinical operations, staging, access, and sequencing all get coordinated with the general contractor so the building keeps running.

FAQs
Questions about our Interior and institutional work
Does Jeff and Simon Ironworks work in the BC Interior?
Yes. We fabricated and installed stairs for Interior Health at Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops and Kelowna General Hospital in Kelowna. We serve Kamloops, Kelowna, and the surrounding Thompson-Okanagan region for commercial, institutional, and custom-residential metalwork, fabricating at our C.W.B. certified Burnaby shop and mobilizing a crew for installation.
How do you handle the distance to Interior projects?
We detail and fabricate the steel at our Burnaby shop under C.W.B. supervision, then run finished assemblies up the Coquihalla, about 3.5 hours to Kamloops and 4 hours to Kelowna, and send an installation crew. Batching fabrication in the shop and installing on site is the standard model for out-of-region institutional and commercial work, and it keeps the welding quality controlled regardless of where the project lands.
Are your stairs certified for institutional and hospital work?
Our shop is certified by the Canadian Welding Bureau to CSA W47.1, which covers the structural and non-structural welding that hospital and institutional stair scopes require. Egress stairs are part of a building`s life-safety system, so the welding documentation has to satisfy the project specification and is verified during inspection.
What kinds of stairs do you fabricate for commercial buildings?
Commercial and institutional stair scopes include egress and fire-exit stairs, steel stair towers, feature stairs, and miscellaneous steel landings and guardrails. We fabricate in steel with powder-coat or galvanized finishes and coordinate shop drawings with the architect and general contractor before any steel is cut.
