Mono Stringer, Kamloops

Why mono stringer staircase work in Kamloops

Custom mono stringer staircases, a single central steel beam with cantilevered treads, engineered for residential and light commercial projects.

Mono stringer staircases suit Kamloops' newer custom homes on the Sahali and Aberdeen benches and out in Sun Rivers and Juniper Ridge, where open-plan layouts and Thompson valley views reward an open stair. One central steel beam, treads cantilevered off both sides, it keeps sightlines to the valley clear in a way a closed stringer cannot. We fabricate every mono stringer at our C.W.B. certified Burnaby shop and deliver it up the Coquihalla for a planned install, the same delivery model behind the Interior Health stairs at Royal Inland Hospital. Kamloops' dry climate shifts the finish brief: salt corrosion is not the threat it is on the coast, but the strong Interior sun fades powder coat, so we spec UV-stable finishes on anything next to a window wall. White oak treads suit the neutral palettes common in the local custom-home market.

Kamloops is our anchor city in the BC Interior. We fabricate at our Burnaby shop and run completed assemblies up the Coquihalla (Highway 5) to Kamloops sites, a model that suits the larger institutional, commercial, and custom-residential scopes the city generates. Our reference project here is the stair fabrication and installation we delivered for Interior Health at Royal Inland Hospital. Kamloops sits at the confluence of the North and South Thompson rivers in a semi-arid valley: hot dry summers above 35°C, intense UV, low annual precipitation, and wide day-to-night temperature swings. Those conditions change the metalwork brief, UV-stable powder coat over salt-driven galvanizing logic, and thermal-movement detailing on long steel runs that you don't worry about on the coast.

Configurations we fabricate

Mono Stringer Staircase options for Kamloops projects

 • Straight-run mono stringers (13 to 15 treads), the baseline configuration
 • L-shape with intermediate landing, 90° direction change
 • U-shape switchback, 180° turn at a landing, two parallel flights
 • Curved (partial arc) stringers, rolled or segmented for architectural effect
 • Cantilevered bottom detail, stringer embedded in the floor for a floating look
 • Integrated LED channels in the side of the stringer
 • Commercial-duty mono stringers with 4.0 kPa live load engineering

Neighbourhoods where this work shows up

 • Sahali, Aberdeen, bench-top custom homes with open-plan stairs and valley views.
 • Sun Rivers, Juniper Ridge, newer hillside builds suited to feature mono stringers.
 • Batchelor Heights, Valleyview, custom and renovation stair scopes.

Kamloops context

Engineering and local factors for mono stringer staircase in Kamloops

Kamloops's climate, building stock, and permit process shape every mono stringer project we deliver here.

Climate

~547 mm annual precipitation, semi-arid, hot dry summers, intense UV, wide diurnal temperature swings

Design snow load for Kamloops is roughly 2.4 kPa ground. Coastal exposure is none. Interior seismic zone, lower demand than the coast, but connections still detailed per CSA W47.1. These are the numbers the engineer pulls when sizing steel for a mono stringer here.

Permits

Kamloops permit process

City of Kamloops requires building permits for new staircases, structural modifications, and load-bearing guardrail work. Confirm scope with the Kamloops building department before fabrication.

Local neighbourhoods

Sahali, Aberdeen, Lower Sahali…

We work throughout Kamloops, including Sahali, Aberdeen, Lower Sahali, Upper Sahali, Downtown / City Centre, North Kamloops, Brocklehurst, Westsyde. Most sites are a 3.5 hours via the Coquihalla (Highway 5) drive from our Burnaby shop.

Process

How a mono stringer project moves through our shop

1. Site visit and design review. Measurements, floor-to-floor height confirmation, opening-dimension planning, and review of structural connection points.

2. Structural engineering. Sealed drawing from a registered P.Eng., stringer section sizing, connection details, load calculations per NBC 2020.

3. Shop drawings. Fabrication drawings coordinating with the architect and GC. Opening dimensions, tread layout, railing integration, finish schedule.

4. Fabrication. Steel cut, welded, and jigged at our Burnaby shop under CWB supervision. Stringer section, tread brackets, and railing integration completed in the shop.

5. Finishing. Powder coat on a prepared substrate. Matte black (RAL 9005) is the default. Custom colours available. Clear-coat over raw steel for industrial looks.

6. Installation. Crane or hand-set depending on site access. Base plate bolted to slab or embedded in floor. Tread installation and railing integration complete the stair.

Recent Kamloops project notes

 • The Interior Health stairs at Royal Inland Hospital are our anchor Kamloops project and the reason we serve the Thompson valley as a full service area.
 • Hillside custom homes in Sahali, Aberdeen, and Sun Rivers are the natural fit for an open mono stringer with valley views.

FAQs

Mono Stringer Staircase questions from Kamloops clients

Answers to the questions we hear most often from Kamloops homeowners, architects, and GCs on mono stringer projects.

How much does a mono stringer staircase cost in Kamloops?

Mono stringer cost in Kamloops depends on configuration (straight-run, L-shape, or curved), tread material, railing type, and floor-to-floor height. The 3.5 hour delivery from our Burnaby shop is handled as one planned install trip rather than a per-visit charge, which keeps it efficient on a full stair scope. Request a quote with your site dimensions and we'll follow up with project-specific pricing.

Can you really build a staircase in Kamloops from a Burnaby shop?

Yes. We detail and fabricate the stringer, treads, and railing complete in Burnaby under C.W.B. supervision, then deliver and install in a single mobilization. It is the same approach we used for the Interior Health stairs at Royal Inland Hospital. Accurate measurements up front matter more than on a local job, so the site visit and dimension check are planned into the schedule.

Does a mono stringer staircase need a permit in Kamloops?

Yes. The City of Kamloops requires a building permit for a new staircase, and a mono stringer is a structural steel element, so the application includes a sealed drawing from a registered P.Eng. Our scope covers coordinating the engineering and providing the drawings your permit application needs.

What finish holds up in the Kamloops climate?

UV-stable powder coat. Kamloops gets strong Interior sun and a dry climate, so the failure mode on an interior feature stair near a south-facing window wall is colour fade, not corrosion. We specify finishes that hold colour, and for any exterior steel stair we add the same UV-stable spec plus thermal-movement detailing.

What tread materials work best for Kamloops homes?

White oak is the most common choice in the local custom-home market, it pairs with the neutral interior palettes in newer Sahali, Aberdeen, and Sun Rivers builds and handles the dry Interior climate well. Walnut and maple show up on higher-end and renovation projects.
