The combination of view lots, steep topography, and a strong architectural culture means almost every new custom home on the North Shore includes a mono stringer or floating stair as a main design element. We work heavily in Edgemont, Upper Lonsdale, Lynn Valley, and the Capilano area, a mix of new builds and substantial renovations where the stair has to carry the visual weight of the main interior. Process
1. Site visit and design review. Measurements, floor-to-floor height confirmation, opening-dimension planning, and review of structural connection points.
2. Structural engineering. Sealed drawing from a registered P.Eng., stringer section sizing, connection details, load calculations per NBC 2020.
3. Shop drawings. Fabrication drawings coordinating with the architect and GC. Opening dimensions, tread layout, railing integration, finish schedule.
4. Fabrication. Steel cut, welded, and jigged at our Burnaby shop under CWB supervision. Stringer section, tread brackets, and railing integration completed in the shop.
5. Finishing. Powder coat on a prepared substrate. Matte black (RAL 9005) is the default. Custom colours available. Clear-coat over raw steel for industrial looks.
6. Installation. Crane or hand-set depending on site access. Base plate bolted to slab or embedded in floor. Tread installation and railing integration complete the stair.

We push duplex hot-dip galvanizing + powder coat on any exterior-adjacent metalwork, and we spec 316 stainless hardware throughout to prevent streak corrosion. The stringer engineering itself is unchanged, but the finish allowances run 15 to 20% higher than a standard inland mono stringer.
White oak and walnut dominate the North Shore custom home market. Walnut is more popular here than it is in Burnaby or East Van, the budgets support it and the darker wood pairs well with the heavier materials (stone, concrete, steel) that show up in North Van architectural work. For more modern or minimalist designs in Edgemont and Lynn Valley, we see increasing use of stone and concrete treads on feature stairs.
For interior mono stringer stairs, snow load is not a direct factor, the stair is inside the building envelope. Where snow load matters is on exterior stairs (decks, entries, rooftop access), which we build as a separate scope using hot-dip galvanized steel to handle both the load and the moisture exposure.
