New Westminster has the oldest housing stock in Metro Vancouver, and our mono stringer work here splits between two very different project types. The first is heritage character home renovations in Queens Park, where a mono stringer replaces an original 1890 to 1920 carriage stair as part of a full interior update. These projects require careful engineering (the existing floor framing has to be assessed and usually reinforced) and careful design coordination (the new mono stringer has to fit into a period interior without looking wrong). Process
How a mono stringer project moves through our shop
1. Site visit and design review. Measurements, floor-to-floor height confirmation, opening-dimension planning, and review of structural connection points.
2. Structural engineering. Sealed drawing from a registered P.Eng., stringer section sizing, connection details, load calculations per NBC 2020.
3. Shop drawings. Fabrication drawings coordinating with the architect and GC. Opening dimensions, tread layout, railing integration, finish schedule.
4. Fabrication. Steel cut, welded, and jigged at our Burnaby shop under CWB supervision. Stringer section, tread brackets, and railing integration completed in the shop.
5. Finishing. Powder coat on a prepared substrate. Matte black (RAL 9005) is the default. Custom colours available. Clear-coat over raw steel for industrial looks.
6. Installation. Crane or hand-set depending on site access. Base plate bolted to slab or embedded in floor. Tread installation and railing integration complete the stair.

Yes, and it is one of our most common New Westminster scopes. The engineering challenge is that the existing floor framing in a 1910-era home was never designed for the concentrated point loads of a mono stringer. We coordinate a structural engineer to assess the existing framing and specify any required reinforcement, usually sistered joists, blocking, or a new steel header at the upper landing. Demo of the original carriage stair is a 1-day scope, and new mono stringer install follows once engineering is complete.
