Mono Stringer, Surrey

Why mono stringer staircase work in Surrey

Custom mono stringer staircases, a single central steel beam with cantilevered treads, engineered for residential and light commercial projects.

Surrey has one of the most active custom home markets in Metro Vancouver, particularly in South Surrey, White Rock, and Morgan Creek. Mono stringer staircase projects in these neighbourhoods are typically part of new custom home builds where the stair is specified during schematic design as the centrepiece of an open-plan main floor. South Surrey and Morgan Creek budgets support premium tread materials (walnut, stone), frameless glass railings, and integrated LED lighting, these projects regularly land in the $28,000, $45,000 range. White Rock has a similar profile with a slight bias toward view-lot projects where cable railings are preferred for sightline preservation. The rest of Surrey, Cloverdale, Fleetwood, Newton, Guildford, sees fewer custom mono stringer projects but steady replacement and renovation work. Our Burnaby shop is 30 to 50 minutes from most Surrey sites depending on traffic and the specific neighbourhood, so the mobilization cost is a modest line item but does not affect project feasibility.

Configurations we fabricate

Mono Stringer Staircase options for Surrey projects

 • Straight-run mono stringers (13 to 15 treads), the baseline configuration
 • L-shape with intermediate landing, 90° direction change
 • U-shape switchback, 180° turn at a landing, two parallel flights
 • Curved (partial arc) stringers, rolled or segmented for architectural effect
 • Cantilevered bottom detail, stringer embedded in the floor for a floating look
 • Integrated LED channels in the side of the stringer
 • Commercial-duty mono stringers with 4.0 kPa live load engineering

Neighbourhoods where this work shows up

 • South Surrey, Morgan Creek, Elgin, active new custom home market with modern mono stringer stairs as the default on open-plan floor plans.
 • White Rock, view-lot custom homes with cable railing preferences.
 • Cloverdale, Fleetwood, Newton, residential renovation and modest new-build projects with standard specifications.

Surrey context

Engineering and local factors for mono stringer staircase in Surrey

Surrey's climate, building stock, and permit process shape every mono stringer project we deliver here.

Climate

1,200 to 1,500 mm annual rainfall

Design snow load for Surrey is roughly 1.6 kPa ground. Coastal exposure is moderate. Vancouver seismic zone, coastal exposure in Crescent Beach and White Rock. These are the numbers the engineer pulls when sizing steel for a mono stringer here.

Permits

Process

How a mono stringer project moves through our shop

1. Site visit and design review. Measurements, floor-to-floor height confirmation, opening-dimension planning, and review of structural connection points.

2. Structural engineering. Sealed drawing from a registered P.Eng., stringer section sizing, connection details, load calculations per NBC 2020.

3. Shop drawings. Fabrication drawings coordinating with the architect and GC. Opening dimensions, tread layout, railing integration, finish schedule.

4. Fabrication. Steel cut, welded, and jigged at our Burnaby shop under CWB supervision. Stringer section, tread brackets, and railing integration completed in the shop.

5. Finishing. Powder coat on a prepared substrate. Matte black (RAL 9005) is the default. Custom colours available. Clear-coat over raw steel for industrial looks.

6. Installation. Crane or hand-set depending on site access. Base plate bolted to slab or embedded in floor. Tread installation and railing integration complete the stair.

Recent Surrey project notes

 • South Surrey and Morgan Creek new custom home mono stringer projects typically use oak or walnut treads with frameless glass or cable railings.
 • White Rock view-lot projects favour cable railings specifically to preserve sightlines across the main floor.

FAQs

Mono Stringer Staircase questions from Surrey clients

Answers to the questions we hear most often from Surrey homeowners, architects, and GCs on mono stringer projects.

How much does a mono stringer staircase cost in Surrey?

Mono stringer staircase cost in Surrey depends on configuration, tread material, railing type, and neighbourhood. South Surrey, Morgan Creek, and White Rock custom homes typically spec premium tread materials and glass or cable railings; Cloverdale, Fleetwood, and Newton projects more often spec standard residential configurations. Our Burnaby shop is 30 to 50 minutes from Surrey sites depending on the specific neighbourhood and traffic. Request a quote with your site dimensions and we'll follow up with project-specific pricing.

Do you work with Surrey custom home builders?

Yes, we're regular subcontractors for several Surrey-area custom home builders active in South Surrey, Morgan Creek, Elgin, and White Rock. We handle shop drawing coordination, structural engineering submittals, and installation scheduling on behalf of the builder. For multi-project builders, we stage mono stringer fabrication across concurrent builds to keep their framing and drywall sequences moving.

How does the City of Surrey permit process work for mono stringer stairs?

The City of Surrey requires building permits for structural staircase work. Processing times run 4 to 10 weeks depending on the scope and the completeness of the submission. White Rock has a separate jurisdiction with its own building department. For both municipalities, the sealed engineering drawings are required and we provide them as part of our standard scope.

What about White Rock view-lot projects?

White Rock has a strong custom home market driven by view lots, Pacific Ocean and Mount Baker views drive significant premiums. Mono stringer stairs in view-lot projects typically pair with cable or frameless glass railings to preserve sightlines from the main living area. We have worked on several White Rock projects where the stair position was specifically set during schematic design to avoid blocking the primary view axis.

How long does a Surrey mono stringer project take from design to install?

Expect 10 to 14 weeks for a standard residential project, the same timeline as Burnaby or Vancouver work. South Surrey custom home builds with architect involvement can extend to 14 to 18 weeks because of additional design iteration and submittal cycles. We schedule fabrication and install to fit the builder's main construction sequence for new-build projects.

What is the most popular mono stringer configuration in Surrey custom homes?

Straight-run mono stringers with white oak treads and cable railings dominate South Surrey and Morgan Creek new builds. L-shape configurations with intermediate landings are the next most common, typically on homes where the main floor plan places the stair adjacent to the kitchen or living area. Curved mono stringers are rare in Surrey compared to West Vancouver, the project budgets don't usually support the extra engineering and fabrication cost.
