Structural Steel Fabrication in New Westminster

New Westminster is the oldest city in BC, and for a structural steel shop that means one thing above all: retrofit. Queens Park alone holds hundreds of character homes from 1890 to 1920, and the surrounding stock in Brow of the Hill, Sapperton, and the West End is not much younger. Buildings of that age were never designed for current seismic code, so a real share of our New West work is retrofit steel, moment frames, braces, and new beams threaded into structures that are still standing on their original bones. Renovations in the heritage stock also need discreet structural steel, a beam replacing a bearing wall without disturbing what makes the house worth keeping. On the modern side, the Royal Columbian Hospital redevelopment in Sapperton has made that corridor one of the most active construction zones in the region, and density along Columbia Street keeps adding multifamily projects that generate miscellaneous steel, canopies, and stair structures. Our shop is 10 to 15 minutes away, which makes New West effectively local: same-day site measures, split deliveries, fast reaction when a renovation opens a wall and finds a surprise. Design loads are standard Lower Mainland, a ground snow load around 1.6 kPa and Vancouver-zone seismic detailing per CSA W47.1. Note that the heritage overlay covering Queens Park and parts of the West End adds a review step for visible work on those properties.

1. RFQ and scope review. We price against the structural drawings and spec sections, and state assumptions and exclusions in writing. Residential quotes in 2 to 5 business days; commercial tenders within the tender window.

2. Shop drawings. Detailed 3D drawings of every member and connection. Anchor bolt and embed layouts release first so foundations are never waiting on steel.

3. Engineer review. Submittals tracked through the engineer of record and architect review cycle, with fast responses to review comments.

4. Fabrication. Steel cut, drilled, fit, and welded at our Burnaby shop under C.W.B. supervision to CSA W47.1, with mill certificate traceability.

5. Finishing. Shop primer, hot-dip galvanizing per ASTM A123, powder coat, or intumescent systems per the specification.

6. Delivery and erection. Steel sequenced to the erection plan, crane picks coordinated with the site, field connections bolted or welded by C.W.B. qualified crews, then inspection documentation at closeout.
