Standard powder-coated steel posts with 316 stainless cables: our most common residential spec. Square or rectangular steel tube posts at 4 to 5 foot spacing, hot-dip galvanized and powder-coated, with 3/16 inch 316 stainless cables and turnbuckle end hardware. Matte black is the most popular finish colour.
Upgraded steel posts with top rail and cable infill: adds a continuous steel top rail over the cable system, which improves the finished appearance and provides a graspable handrail for code compliance where required.
Stair-mounted cable railings: premium over a straight deck run because every post and cable termination is custom-fitted at the stringer angle. Worth it for the finished appearance on a modern staircase.
Full 316 stainless system (waterfront spec): stainless steel posts, cables, and hardware throughout for direct salt exposure properties on the West Vancouver waterfront, Deep Cove, and Horseshoe Bay.
Commercial mezzanine spec: heavier post spacing and cable gauge for higher occupancy loads on commercial and multi-family installations.

The process
Cable railing installation is straightforward compared to glass, but the engineering and tensioning details still need to be handled properly.
1. Site visit and measure. We measure exact dimensions, confirm mounting conditions (concrete, wood framing, composite deck), and discuss design options. Free for Metro Vancouver residential projects.
2. Quote. Written quote within 2 to 3 business days covering post count and spacing, cable spec, finish, and installation total. We include a detailed breakdown so you can see what drives the price.
3. Shop drawings. Once the design is confirmed, we produce post placement and cable termination drawings for your approval. Changes at this stage have no cost impact.
4. Fabrication. Steel posts are cut, welded, hot-dip galvanized, and powder-coated at our Burnaby shop, typically 2 to 3 weeks for a standard residential project.
5. Installation. Post installation, cable running, and initial tensioning is usually 1 to 2 days on site for a standard residential deck. Stair-mounted and complex projects may take 2 to 4 days.
6. Initial settling visit. We come back 2 to 4 weeks after initial install to retention cables after the system has settled. This is included in our installation cost and is the difference between a cable railing that stays in spec and one that does not.

Yes, when designed and tensioned correctly. BC Building Code requires that guards prevent passage of a 100 mm sphere. Cable railings meet this by spacing the cables at 75 to 95 mm vertical centres under proper tension. The cables must be tensioned firmly enough that a child pushing between them cannot create a 100 mm gap. Our default spec uses 75 mm cable spacing to provide margin for seasonal tension changes between maintenance visits.
For the first 6 to 12 months after installation, cables settle and should be checked and retensioned 2 to 3 times. After the initial settling, a tension check every 2 to 3 years keeps the system within code spec. Vancouver climate changes (expansion in summer heat, contraction in winter cold) affect tension slightly, so annual visual inspection is a good practice. Professional retensioning is billed per visit based on post count.

The cables run parallel to the stringer angle rather than horizontal, and each cable termination is custom-fitted to the post geometry. Stair-mounted runs carry a premium over a straight deck run because every post and cable termination is unique, we quote each one against the specific stringer geometry.
We use 316 stainless steel aircraft cable, typically 3/16 inch (4.8 mm) diameter for residential applications. The cable is 1x19 strand construction for minimum stretch and maximum strength. 316 grade stainless is essential for Metro Vancouver, 304 grade will eventually develop rust spots in our wet climate. For waterfront properties, the cable and all end hardware must be 316 grade to handle salt air exposure.
Cable railings with proper 75 mm spacing meet the BC Code sphere test and are safe for children. The concern with cable is not safety, it is that some children find the horizontal cables climbable. For families with young climbers, a vertical picket railing or glass infill may be a better choice even though cable is code-compliant. For pets, cable railings are generally fine, dogs do not try to climb them and cats rarely attempt it.
Cable railing maintenance in Metro Vancouver involves three tasks: annual visual inspection for damaged cables or loose fittings, periodic retensioning (every 2 to 3 years for stable systems), and occasional cleaning to prevent mineral deposits or bird droppings from accumulating at end fittings. Technically yes, but we recommend against it for permanent residential installations. Wood posts are not ideal for cable railing because the cable tension creates concentrated loads that eventually pull out of wood fibres, loosening the system. Steel posts or a steel frame with wood cladding gives you the wood appearance without the structural concerns. We can fabricate steel posts with wood handrails that deliver the look clients want with the performance cable railings need.
