Mono stringer staircase design guide, treads, nosing, handrails, finishes
Structural engineering gets the mono stringer to stand up. Design is what makes it worth looking at. This page covers the design decisions we make on every mono stringer stair we fabricate out of our Burnaby shop, tread material, nosing profile, bracket detail, handrail and guard design, powder coat and clear coat finish options, and integrated LED lighting. These are the choices that separate a generic modern stair from one that belongs in its room.

Tread material options
The tread material is the single biggest driver of how a mono stringer stair looks and feels. Each material has a natural range of thicknesses, a finishing process, and cost tier. The options below are what we build most frequently in Metro Vancouver.
- Solid white oak, 2 inch thick: Mid-range tier. The workhorse residential choice. Warm tone, straight grain, finishes consistently with oil or polyurethane. Holds up to Pacific Northwest humidity swings better than softer woods. Most of the mono stringer stairs we build in Vancouver and Burnaby are white oak.
- Solid walnut, 2.5 inch thick: Premium tier. Darker, richer grain, significant material cost step up from oak. Walnut shows lighter colour variation tread-to-tread than oak, which some clients love and others fight, worth seeing real samples before committing.
- Solid Douglas fir, 2 inch thick: Mid-range tier. Regional choice, fir is a Pacific Northwest native and reads as local. Softer than oak, shows wear faster, but takes stain well and is a good match for heritage renovations.
- Engineered wood with steel plate core: Premium tier. Used when the design wants hardwood but the load or fire rating requires a structural core. The hardwood veneer wraps a steel plate inside the tread. More expensive but structurally meaningful on longer cantilevers.
- Steel plate, 3/8 or 1/2 inch: Baseline to mid-range tier. Raw or powder-coated solid steel treads, sometimes with a non-slip tread pattern. Industrial look, robust, easy to clean. Acoustically noisier than wood without a rubber pad underneath.
- Stone (marble, granite, basalt), 30 to 40 mm: Top tier. Heavy, changes the stringer calc meaningfully and requires careful bracket detail because stone does not tolerate point loads. Spectacular in the right room.
- Concrete-filled metal pan, commercial: Baseline tier commercial. Steel pan tread with concrete infill; used on commercial mono stringer stairs where fire rating, durability, and matching adjacent concrete flooring are priorities.
Tread thickness and overhang
Tread thickness influences perceived solidity and affects the structural calc. 1.5 inch thick hardwood reads as thin and modern but may flex under live load at longer cantilevers; 3 inch reads as substantial but adds weight and cost. Most of our oak treads are 2 inches; walnut treads are 2 to 2.5 inches because thicker walnut carries better visually.
Tread depth (the front-to-back dimension of the tread) is set by BC Building Code: minimum 254 mm (10 inches) run for residential, with typical treads at 280 to 300 mm to feel comfortable. The overhang past the stringer on each side is where the visual character of the mono stringer comes from, short overhangs (under 6 inches each side) look chunky, long overhangs (over 10 inches each side) look delicate but push the cantilever calc.
Nosing profiles
The nosing is the visible front edge of the tread, how it meets the air above the riser gap. On a mono stringer stair without risers, the nosing is the leading edge of every tread and the first thing your eye lands on. Small differences in profile change the whole read of the stair.
- Square: 90-degree edge, cleanest modern look. Used on most mono stringer stairs we build. Shows dents sooner than eased edges because the corner is sharp.
- Eased: 3 mm radius on the top and front edges, slightly softer than square. Standard choice on walnut treads because the softer edge wears better.
- Bullnose: Full half-round on the front edge. Traditional look. Rare on mono stringer but appropriate if the rest of the house is traditional.
- Chamfer: 45-degree cut across the top front edge. Industrial look. Pairs well with steel plate or raw steel treads.
Bracket types
The tread-to-stringer bracket detail is the signature of the mono stringer. Every bracket is visible from the side of the stair, so the bracket detail carries as much visual weight as the tread itself.
- Plate bracket: Flat steel welded perpendicular to the stringer, tread bolted on top from underneath. Cleanest side view because no hardware is visible from the room. Most common on the mono stringer stairs we build. Mid-range tier in fabrication.
- Folded bracket: Plate bent into a U or L shape that wraps under the front edge of the tread. More structural feel. Adds visual weight. Sometimes preferred for heavier stone or steel plate treads where the wrap helps support the front edge.
- Concealed bracket: A steel armature embedded inside the tread itself, plated or doweled in during tread fabrication. The tread appears to float off the stringer with no visible support. Top tier in fabrication labour because every tread has to be precision-matched to its bracket.
- Stub bracket: Short steel tube or plate projecting from the stringer, tread bolted or doweled onto the stub. Intermediate visual weight between plate and concealed. Popular where the design wants a minimal bracket reveal but concealed is outside budget.
Handrails and guards
Handrails and guards on a mono stringer stair are governed by the BC Building Code. The summary for residential stairs:
- Handrail height: 865 to 965 mm above the tread nosing, measured vertically
- Guard height: minimum 900 mm for interior residential (stair or landing), 1070 mm for exterior or commercial assembly
- Guard opening: must not permit passage of a 100 mm sphere
- Handrail must be continuous for the length of the flight and must return to the wall or post at both ends
- Handrail must be graspable, circular or rounded cross-section, diameter 30 to 45 mm typical
Common guard types on mono stringer stairs:
- Steel picket: Vertical 1/2 inch square or round pickets at 100 mm spacing, welded to top and bottom rails. Classic modern look, baseline to mid-range cost.
- Cable rail: 3/16 inch stainless cables tensioned between heavy end posts. Visually light but the end posts are beefy to handle the cable tension. Premium tier because of the hardware count.
- Glass rail: Structural laminated glass panels with a top cap rail. Frameless (no top cap) is the lightest visually but requires thicker glass (12+12 or 15+15 mm laminated with SGP interlayer). Top tier cost.
- Rod rail: Horizontal 3/8 inch steel rod at roughly 100 mm vertical spacing. Technically allowed only where the rod spacing passes the sphere test (which typically requires closer spacing than 100 mm when measured with the rod diameter subtracted).
Handrail returns and terminations
The code requires every handrail to return to the wall, a post, or itself at both ends. The return is the difference between a stair that looks finished and one that looks like someone ran out of budget. Common termination details:
- Wall return: Horizontal segment curves 90 degrees into the wall and is fastened to a bracket. Clean, standard.
- Down return to post: Rail curves down to meet the top of the newel or guard post. Works on open-sided stairs.
- Self return (loop): Rail curves 180 degrees back to itself. Minimalist, used on modern designs where the rail ends at a newel with no wall.
- Volute or scroll: Traditional carved scroll end. We do not do volutes or scrolls on mono stringer stairs. The detail is inconsistent with the modern stringer typology.
Powder coat options
Powder coat is the default finish on mono stringer stairs. The colour range is wider than most clients expect, every RAL colour is available, and different sheens (matte, satin, gloss) produce different looks on the same colour.
- Matte black (RAL 9005): The default. Clean, consistent, hides minor surface imperfections, goes with almost any interior.
- Charcoal grey (RAL 7016): Slightly softer than pure black, reads better against bright white walls.
- Bronze (custom mix): Warm metallic, pairs well with walnut treads. Custom colour, slightly longer lead time.
- Off-white (RAL 9003 or similar): Used when the design intent is for the stringer to recede rather than stand out. Shows marks and wear faster than darker colours.
- Deep navy (RAL 5011) or forest green (RAL 6009): Used on statement stairs in rooms with unusual palettes.
- Textured powder coat: Any colour in a fine texture finish, hides surface imperfections better than smooth, feels different underhand.
Powder coat is applied at a coating shop after fabrication. Typical lead time is 3 to 5 days including drop-off and pickup. Touch-ups after installation are possible but require a mobile coater, minor dings are normally handled with a colour-matched touch-up paint.
Clear coat over raw steel
For industrial and loft-style projects, the stringer can be sealed with a clear matte or satin lacquer that preserves the raw mill finish and weld marks. The visual effect is different from powder coat, the steel reads as an honest material rather than a painted finish. Clear coat is a premium finish option because the prep work is intensive: every visible weld has to be dressed by hand, any grinder marks have to be blended, and the surface has to be evenly cleaned before the lacquer goes on.
Clear coat is not durable outdoors, any exterior stair needs a different finish (galvanized or a two-part epoxy/urethane system). For interior applications in Metro Vancouver's climate, a two-part clear lacquer lasts well as long as the stair is not subjected to constant cleaning chemicals.
Integrated LED lighting
LED lighting integrated into the stringer is a premium upgrade that adds a significant visual element at night. The typical detail is a channel machined or fabricated into the side of the stringer, sized for a slim low-profile LED strip, with a diffuser lens to soften the light source. Wiring runs inside the HSS tube and exits at a concealed point, usually the base plate or the top connection, where the electrician takes over.
Coordination notes: the LED channel has to be designed before fabrication because machining a channel into a finished stringer is not realistic. The driver location has to be planned with the electrician during shop drawings. Voltage (12V vs 24V) affects strip length per driver and affects how many drops are needed on a long stair. And the stringer must have a way to pull wire, a fish tape accessible port is helpful.
Under-tread LED lighting is a common alternative, strips mounted to the underside of each tread, illuminating the step below. Less dramatic than stringer lighting but easier to retrofit and cheaper.
How the design choices combine
Typical combinations we build for different project types:
- Modern family home, mid-range: 10-inch HSS stringer in matte black powder coat, 2 inch solid white oak treads with square nosing, plate brackets, steel picket rail with 3/4 inch stainless top cap.
- Modern family home, premium: 12-inch HSS stringer in charcoal grey powder coat, 2.5 inch solid walnut treads with eased nosing, stub brackets, frameless glass rail.
- Loft conversion, industrial: Built-up plate stringer in clear-coated raw steel, 1/2 inch steel plate treads with chamfer nosing, folded brackets, steel rod rail with horizontal rods.
- Commercial retail, modern: HSS stringer in custom bronze powder coat, concrete-filled metal pan treads with square nosing, plate brackets, cable rail between stainless posts.
- High-end residential with LED: 12-inch HSS stringer in matte black with integrated LED channel both sides, 2.5 inch solid walnut treads with eased nosing, concealed brackets, frameless glass rail with LED-edge lit glass panels.

FAQs
What is the best tread material for a mono stringer stair?
There is no single best, the right answer depends on the room and the budget. Solid white oak at 2 inch thickness is the most-specified tread in Vancouver because it looks warm, finishes consistently, and handles wear well. Walnut is the premium upgrade with a meaningful step in material cost. Steel plate treads work when the design intent is industrial. Stone treads work when the house is stone-heavy and the structure can carry the weight. What nosing profile should I specify?
Four profiles show up on most modern mono stringer stairs: square (90-degree edge, cleanest modern look), eased (3 mm radius, slightly softer), bullnose (full half-round on the front edge, traditional), and chamfer (45-degree cut, industrial). Square nosing reads as the most modern and is the default on the mono stringer stairs we build. Bullnose and chamfer shift the feel toward traditional or industrial. The nosing profile also affects how the tread catches light and how it wears over time, square edges show dents sooner than eased edges.
Which bracket type is the cleanest visually?
Plate brackets. Flat steel welded perpendicular to the stringer, tread bolted on top from underneath, no visible hardware from the side. Folded brackets (U-shaped plates wrapping under the tread) add visual weight and are more structural. Concealed brackets, a steel armature embedded inside the tread, give the cleanest look of all but cost more because of the precision fabrication required. For most projects we recommend plate brackets unless the design specifically calls for concealed.
What sphere test do I need to pass on the guard?
Under <a href="https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/industry/construction-industry/building-codes-standards/bc-codes">BC Building Code</a>, no opening in a guard for a residential stair may permit the passage of a 100 mm sphere (about 4 inches). For a commercial or assembly occupancy, the same 100 mm applies in most cases. The sphere test drives baluster spacing, the height of the gap between bottom rail and tread, and the detailing around the tread-to-guard connection. We size baluster spacing for a typical residential mono stringer stair at 100 mm centre-to-centre or less depending on baluster thickness.
What handrail height is required by BC Building Code?
Handrails on residential stairs must be between 865 and 965 mm above the tread nosing per the <a href="https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/industry/construction-industry/building-codes-standards/bc-codes">BC Building Code</a>. Guards (the vertical barrier) must be at least 900 mm high on interior residential stairs and 1070 mm on exterior stairs with a fall of more than 600 mm. The handrail has to be continuous along the flight and has to return to the wall or post at both ends to prevent clothing catching.
What is a handrail return and why does it matter?
A handrail return is a short horizontal or angled section at each end of the handrail that brings the rail back to the wall, guard post, or itself. It is required by the <a href="https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/industry/construction-industry/building-codes-standards/bc-codes">BC Building Code</a> on both ends of every handrail. The purpose is to prevent a loose sleeve or bag strap from catching on the open end of the rail. Aesthetically, a well-detailed return is the difference between a professional stair and one that looks unfinished, the rail either wraps cleanly into the wall or terminates at a properly detailed end cap.
What are the common finish options on a mono stringer?
Powder coat in matte black (RAL 9005) is the most-specified finish. Other options we build regularly: charcoal grey (RAL 7016), bronze (custom mix), off-white (RAL 9003 or similar), deep navy (RAL 5011), and raw steel with a clear matte lacquer for an industrial look. Textured powder coat adds a tactile matte finish that hides minor imperfections. Custom RAL colours are available on request, lead time adds about a week over stock colours.
Can you integrate LED lighting into the stringer?
Yes. Integrated LED lighting is increasingly common on high-end residential mono stringer stairs. A channel is machined or fabricated into the side of the stringer, with the LED strip recessed and diffused so the light source is not visible. Wiring runs inside the HSS tube stringer and exits at a concealed point. The driver and switching are handled by an electrician. LED integration adds to fabrication time and requires coordination with the electrician during shop drawings. Cost depends on strip length and driver complexity.
How do I pick between cable, glass, and steel picket railings?
Steel picket is the most cost-effective and reads as classic modern. Vertical 1/2 inch square or round pickets at 100 mm spacing, welded top and bottom rail. Cable rail uses stainless cables tensioned between end posts, visually lighter but expensive per run because of the post and tensioner hardware. Glass rail uses structural laminated glass panels, the lightest visually, most expensive, and requires precise detailing. For a single flight, cable sits between picket and glass in cost; for long stair runs, cable cost scales more steeply than picket.
Can I use a clear coat over raw steel instead of powder coat?
Yes, but the prep work has to be exceptional. Any weld discoloration, grinder marks, or oxidation that is visible before the clear coat goes on will be locked in forever under the lacquer. We do clear-coat raw steel on a subset of our mono stringer stairs, typically for clients who want an industrial look or whose architect has specified it. The process involves careful bead blasting to even out the mill finish, hand-dressing every weld, careful degreasing, and a two-part clear lacquer in a controlled environment. Clear coat is a premium finish option, it costs more than powder coat despite using less material, because the labour is all in the prep.
