Structural Steel, Whistler
Why structural steel work in Whistler
Structural steel packages fabricated and installed from our C.W.B. certified Burnaby shop: beams, columns, frames, canopies, stair towers, mezzanines, and miscellaneous steel.
Whistler is the most demanding structural steel environment we serve. The design ground snow load runs around 7.0 kPa, more than four times Vancouver's, and the municipality applies it without sympathy: every canopy, exterior stair, and roof-connected structure gets engineered structural design, and Resort Municipality of Whistler permits run 6 to 12 weeks. On top of the snow sit 10 metres or more of annual snowfall, hard freeze-thaw cycling that finds every coating flaw, and a construction calendar that compresses most exterior work into the window between spring melt and the first sticking snow. Steel actually thrives under those constraints. Members sized for 7.0 kPa are still compact compared to the timber alternative, and shop-fabricated steel erects fast, which is exactly what a compressed season needs. Much of our Whistler work supports the luxury build market in Kadenwood, Whistler Crest, and Alta Vista, where timber-frame and post-and-beam construction relies on structural steel underneath and between the wood: ridge beams, transfer members, moment frames, and the concealed connection steel that makes heavy timber work at these loads. We run Whistler on a planned-mobilization model from our Burnaby shop, 1 hour 45 minutes down Highway 99: complete fabrication and finishing in the shop, hot-dip galvanizing standard on anything exposed, then sequenced delivery and erection trips booked tight to the site schedule, because a missed week in a Whistler season is not a week you get back.
Whistler is the highest-value single-family custom home market in the province. Luxury builds in Kadenwood, Whistler Crest, and Alta Vista routinely carry $50,000, $150,000+ metalwork packages, feature staircases, interior and exterior railings, custom steel-and-glass systems, structural steel for timber-frame construction. The environment is unforgiving: 10+ metres of annual snowfall, freeze-thaw cycling, and seasonal construction windows that compress timelines from spring through fall.
