1. Site visit and opening check. Confirm the opening diameter, headroom clearance, and floor-to-floor height for code compliance.
2. Engineering. Sealed drawing sizing the central column, tread brackets, and guard system to code.
3. Shop drawings. Tread layout, column section, guard detail, and finish schedule.
4. Fabrication. Central column, tread brackets, and guard fabricated at our Burnaby shop.
5. Finishing. Powder coat for interior; hot-dip galv + powder coat for exterior applications.
6. Installation. 1 to 2 days for a residential spiral; longer for complex commercial applications.

Only in limited cases. BC Building Code allows spiral stairs as primary egress for a single occupant area and secondary stairs serving a limited number of occupants. Most residential spiral installations are secondary stairs (loft access, rooftop access, basement secondary stair) because the tread geometry doesn't meet standard egress dimensions. We confirm code compliance for your specific application during the design phase.
A 48-inch diameter spiral needs a 50 to 52 inch rough opening; a 60-inch diameter spiral needs 62 to 64 inches. Headroom requirement is 6'-4" minimum for code-compliant installations, with 6'-8" preferred. Floor-to-floor height determines tread count and rise per tread. We verify these dimensions during the initial site visit.
Occasionally as architectural elements. West-side Richmond custom homes with modern open-plan designs sometimes specify spirals for loft, rooftop, or secondary access.
